Who we are
A district hospital, and honest about it
Two hundred beds on Tubman Boulevard, serving Sinkor and Congo Town. We are not a referral hospital and we do not pretend to be.
What we will not pretend
The things we send elsewhere
A hospital that claims to do everything sends people home with false reassurance. These are the things we refer on, and we do it the same day rather than after three visits.
- Cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and complex orthopaedics.
- Cancer treatment beyond diagnosis and pain control.
- Intensive care for adults needing a ventilator for more than a few hours.
- Specialist paediatric surgery.
Decisions that can be traced back
Most of what makes a hospital safe is unglamorous and administrative. These four are the ones we would want a patient to know about.
Every death is reviewed
Not to apportion blame, but because a death nobody has looked at is the most overdue thing in a hospital.
Money is watched
Voids, waivers and till counts are read every week by somebody who did not make them.
Records are not quietly edited
A correction is recorded as a correction. The original stays readable underneath it.
One record, one set of books
The chart and the ledger describe the same events, so neither can be adjusted without the other disagreeing.
Chest pain, bad bleeding, trouble breathing, a fit, a bad injury, or a child who is limp or will not feed. Come now, or send somebody.
